Erectile Dysfunction Injections: How to Self-Inject
Erectile dysfunction (ED) is common with increasing age in males. Some studies have shown that approximately 40% of men are prone to this condition by the age of 40. Erectile dysfunction is the inability to get and maintain an erection firm enough for sex. Symptoms are often noticeable to the person experiencing them, like not being able to get an erection sometimes or never or not having it last long enough for sex.
Treatment options
Treatment varies from person to person, based on the underlying cause of erectile dysfunction. The person is evaluated for both physical and psychological conditions. Some of the treatment options include:
- Lifestyle changes: Certain lifestyle changes will be suggested early on to improve erectile dysfunction. These include quitting smoking, limiting alcohol consumption, and engaging in physical activity such as jogging, exercising, or doing yoga to maintain a healthy weight.
- Counselling: You may be recommended counselling to deal with any psychological or emotional stress that may be affecting your ED. Healthcare providers may suggest you take measures to manage stress and anxiety
- Oral medications: Healthcare providers may help treat ED by giving you oral medications that will help you keep an erection. These medicines work by relaxing the smooth muscles and increasing the blood flow within the penis during sexual stimulation.
- Injectables: Many men with ED might need extra help to get an erection when oral medicines do not cause the desired effect. Prescribed injectables such as alprostadil are recommended that can be injected into the penis, which can increase the blood flow in the penis immediately.
- Vacuum erection device: A vacuum erection device (VED) helps men facing erectile dysfunction to get and keep an erection.
- Penile Implant surgery: Penile implant surgery is done to insert a penile implant device inside the penis to enable men having erectile dysfunction to get an erection.
Erectile dysfunction injections
In the Western countries, Erectile dysfunction injections (Bimix, Trimix, Super Trimix) come in vials where the medication is extracted with a needle syringe. In India, these penile injections are not readily available and hence the andrologists in India reconstitute the penile injections. The ED injection is to be injected at the midpoint of the penis. It is suggested to inject the medication 5 to 15 minutes prior to expecting an erection. The medicine usually works within 5 to 10 minutes from the time of injection, and an attempt at intercourse should be made within 10 to 30 minutes after the injection is administered. How to self-inject?
The healthcare providers give the required instructions and training on how to self-inject the medication properly. Usually, it takes a maximum of 2 hospital visits to learn how to inject them. Your first injection is done under the doctor’s supervision in the clinic or hospital.
The preparation for self-injecting involves the following steps:
Step 1: Wash your hands well and find a clean surface to assemble the supplies.
The supplies include the medication vial, a syringe, alcohol wipes, and cotton balls.
Step 2: Draw the medication.
- Most injections given to patients in India are prefilled and ready-to-use
Step 3: Injecting the medication.
- Use an alcohol wipe to clean the injection site. Your healthcare provider will show you the area where it should be injected.
- Rest your penis against your inner thigh and pull it gently towards your knee. Do not put pressure on the penis by twisting or rotating.
- Take the syringe and remove its cap. Rest your arm on your thigh for support.
- Insert the needle at a 90° angle to the shaft of the penis. Press down the plunger to inject the medicine. Do this quickly without any breaks to reduce any tension or discomfort.
- Throw the syringe away safely.
To gain erection
- Apply pressure to the injection site for a 1 minute to avoid swelling or bruising on the penis.
- Standing up can help you get an erection.
- Foreplay can help with stimulation too.
Additional instructions
- All medications should be stored in the refrigerator and away from light. Some medications don’t need to be stored in the refrigerator; your healthcare provider will inform you about them.
- You should seek medical care if you see any bleeding, uncontrollable pain, or any visible scarring appear on the penis.
Erectile dysfunction injections are one of the available treatments for ED. They can help you achieve an erection and are found to be effective in people who cannot use or get the desired outcome from other alternative medications.
